Understanding the requirements and training options for concealed carry in Nevada

Nevada CCW Requirements

  • Be at least 21 years old (18 for military)
  • Complete an approved firearms training course
  • Pass a background check
  • Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident

Firearms Safety Fundamentals

Safe gun handling is the foundation of responsible firearm ownership and concealed carry

The Four Universal Safety Rules

Treat Every Firearm as Loaded

Always assume any firearm you handle is loaded, even if you just checked it yourself. This fundamental rule prevents most accidental discharges.

Before handling any firearm, visually and physically verify its condition. Make it a habit to check the chamber and magazine every single time you pick up a gun.

Never Point at Anything You Don’t Intend to Destroy

Keep your firearm pointed in a safe direction at all times. This means maintaining muzzle awareness whether you’re at the range, at home, or carrying.

A ‘safe direction’ depends on your environment. At the range, it’s downrange. At home, it might be toward an exterior wall away from occupied spaces. Always be conscious of what’s beyond your target.

Keep Your Finger Off the Trigger

Your finger should only touch the trigger when you’re on target and have made the decision to shoot. Until then, keep it indexed along the frame.

Trigger discipline is crucial. Many negligent discharges occur because someone had their finger on the trigger while moving, drawing, or re-holstering their firearm.

Be Sure of Your Target and Beyond

Your finger should only touch the trigger when you’re on target and have made the decision to shoot. Until then, keep it indexed along the frame.

Trigger discipline is crucial. Many negligent discharges occur because someone had their finger on the trigger while moving, drawing, or re-holstering their firearm.

Safe Storage Guidelines

Proper storage is critical for preventing unauthorized access, especially in homes with children. Nevada law doesn’t mandate specific storage requirements, but responsible gun owners should follow these best practices:

  • Store firearms unloaded in a locked safe or cabinet
  • Keep ammunition separate from firearms
  • Use gun locks or cable locks as an additional layer of security
  • Store firearms out of reach and sight of children
  • Consider quick-access safes for home defense firearms
  • Ensure all household members know firearms are present and respect safety rules

Legal Note: While Nevada doesn’t require specific storage methods, you can be held liable if a child gains access to your firearm and causes harm.

Recommended Training Providers

Top-rated CCW training facilities and firearms instructors in Las Vegas and Nevada

What to Look for in a Training Provider

Instructor Credentials

Look for NRA-certified instructors or those with law enforcement/military backgrounds. Experience matters when it comes to teaching both technical skills and real-world application.

Class Size

Smaller classes mean more individual attention. For CCW courses, 6-12 students is ideal to ensure everyone gets hands-on practice and feedback.

Facility Quality

Modern, well-maintained ranges with proper ventilation and safety equipment. Classroom facilities should be professional and comfortable.

Course Content

State approval is mandatory, but the best courses go beyond minimum requirements. Look for programs that include scenario training and practical application.
